I promise I’m really 28…

Last night was the premiere of the third season of “Secret Life of the American Teenager” on ABC Family. I’m probably only one of five 28 year olds who watches this show, but I find it quite enjoyable. I’ve tried to compress my thoughts into a few paragraphs to try and keep this short. Oh and in case there actually is anyone else who watches this show and you haven’t seen last night’s episode you might want to stop reading now.

I was not very happy about where they are leading for this season though. The main girl had her baby at the end of last season so I guess they needed a new plot line to throw in there. Here’s what they picked. One of the girls spent the first season talking about abstinence and waiting until she is married to have sex, but then her boyfriend cheated on her because he couldn’t wait. Blah blah blah – men, geez. Anyways, by the end of the second season she and her boyfriend are back together and she is fighting with her dad because she is no longer wearing her purity ring.

Cue last night’s episode – dad is mad, daughter is mad, dad goes on mission trip, daughter has sex with her boyfriend, dad dies in plane crash. Mother and son/brother come home to tell daughter right after she had sex with boyfriend for the first time, son/brother tells her she killed him, she killed dad. Oh the drama. Anyways in the preview for the season it looks like they are going to have the girl dealing with guilt over killing her dad because she got in a fight with him and then he left and she had sex and he died. WTF? I’m not sure I agree with this message ABC Family is sending with the show – if you have sex before you are married, you will get pregnant or someone will die. Awesome.

Now that I’m older, I guess I would say I’m all for keeping teens from having sex and having babies, but I don’t know if I would go about it in quite this manner. I do however appreciate the cheesy PSA’s at the end for an organization that not only promotes abstinence, but also safe sex practices (Yes I went to the web site – I was curious).

I could go on and on about other things in the episode, but then my little recap might take longer to read than actually watching the show, so I’ll stop here.

Oh my gosh! Rach and I watched the show last year – but I didn’t realize new ones were on. I just might have to tune in again. Rachel was super hooked – but I frequently got roped in too. I can’t believe what’s her name caved (Grace, maybe?). She has no backbone – it didn’t take a lot of convincing I don’t think. You forgot to mention that her brother has Downs Syndrome and makes everything ultra dramatic – I mean disappointing your mentally challenged brother is never good.

I was trying to keep my recap short so I didn’t mention a lot. Yeah, it didn’t take Grace much to cave. I’m glad I’m not the only one who watches this show – the new ones just started this week so you’ve only missed the one…
