Friday Fun & Games
November 6, 2009 at 2:36 pm (Funny Things) (Lists, Music)
Ok, so for no other reasons than I’m bored and I can’t think of anything else to write, I’m going to create a game, or a contest if you will.
Today I went to the gym over lunch but I was super tired and not really in the mood to run 2 miles, so I made a playlist of 9 songs to pump me up.
The first person that can guess 8 of the 9 songs with the correct artist by 12m Thu 11/12 will get $15* (I know it’s not a ton, but hopefully you guys will play anyways)
1. Each guess must include 9 songs with an artist listed.
2. All guesses must be commented, I will not accept emailed answers because then others can’t keep track of what’s been guessed.
3. I will give hints periodically and will reply to all guesses with how many you got correct.
Hints:
1. All songs are from 1992 to 2002
2. I would classify them all as Hip-Hop/Rap, but I-tunes would not.
3. Most of the playlist was probably a little inappropriate to be listening to at a church
4. At least four of the 9 songs include locations. One of these names a park and the city/neighborhood, one names an address, one names some coasts and a bunch of other places, and one says Hotlanta.
5. One song I have written about on my blog.
6. Only one song is by a woman/women.
7. One song was in a Diet Coke commercial.
8. One song is originally by Jesse Jaymes and was also covered by the Beastie Boys, but I have the version covered by someone else.
9. Two songs are from Soundtracks. One is from a 1995 movie I’ve never seen and I have the version from the soundtrack although it can also be found on an album by the artist. The other is from a 2001 Nicole Kidman movie, but it is not an original song and it is not on any of the artists albums.
10. One of the artists name starts with Lil’
11. Warren G is not the artist for any of the songs, but he is mentioned in one of them along with the DOG.
12. One song is reminiscent of a child’s clapping song.
13. I like jelly.
14. The song from 1992 is very likely the first rap song I ever heard.
15. The song from the 2001 movie is also the song that is by a woman.
16. Locations from hint 4 include: Kings Park, 111 morningside, Indiana (2), from St. Louis to Memphis.
One hint per song (and random ones at that):
17. I like summertime and birds. (1995)
18. I have two ears, one mouth, one nose and two eyes. (2002)
19. I wasn’t but some girls are.(1992 or 1993)
20. I speak french (2001)
21. Ditto? Wait, no that’s not right. (1993)
22. Band named for a street (2002)
23. I really get annoyed when people use bad grammar (2000)
24. I’ve never driven an Impala (1999)
25. I got Nothin’ (1992)
* If you are related to me: You must get all 9 songs right to win and if you do, then your payout will be in 10 years as is standard.
And go…
Productivity
November 3, 2009 at 10:04 pm (Happenings) (Lists)
Here is a list of things that would have been more productive than going to my annual Home Owners Association meeting tonight…
1. Playing on Facebook and Twitter all night
2. Writing chapter 2 of my book to go with chapter 1 that was written 3 years ago. (Actually – this should probably be re-writing chapter 1)
3. My neighbor actually only parking in one parking spot.
4. Eating Skittles
5. Everything Else!
Long story short, I figured that since I’ve never been and this was the third one since I bought my place, I would go check it out. If you even hear me mention it next November – please just smack me.
Lists, lists, lists
October 29, 2009 at 11:56 pm (Random Thoughts) (Lists)
I spent entirely too much time today playing with the new list feature on twitter. I am in love.
I think my favorite thing about it that now I can follow a ridiculous amount of feeds without clogging up my main timeline.
I like to keep up with entertainment stuff and now I can in one handy list.
I also made a list for Atlanta so I can keep up with things happening around town.
I also made a list for all things music.
Finally, I made a list for news. Since I only actually watch about 20 minutes of news in the morning, I have been getting a lot of my news from CNN’s twitter feed. I decided to add more of a variety now that I could easily.
Did I say that I’m in love.
I was also added to a list. This may have made my day. Thanks Ronnica
My week in TV 10-26-09
October 26, 2009 at 12:06 pm (Random Thoughts) (Lists, TV)
Ok, so doing this weekly isn’t really going as planned. I think I’ve skipped a couple and this one’s a few days late…
Best Line: Community (I am super excited that NBC picked this up for the full season. I love it)
“No, because I’m not in a commercial for breakfast cereal” – Jeff
Best thing I watched: House
I must admit that half of the reason House was the best thing I watched is because I’m really enjoying seeing Jesse Spencer for more than 3 minutes an episode – and intensely guilty self-torturing Dr. Chase is kind of nice to watch. But, other than that I also really liked this episode. I liked that House kept forcing Chase to see the patient and deal with his fear/guilt. I do not like that Chase is not being honest with Cameron, but I guess maybe this is just leading up to how they are going to write her off the show. I also found it interesting that House thought he was hallucinating again because of Wilson’s whispering, but instead of ignoring it, he actually owned up to it. I also liked this tiny part of the story because I sometimes talk to my parents and well, it can’t be that weird if they’re doing it on TV too. Right? Anyways…
Worst Thing I watched: Gossip Girl
I am just not liking Hillary Duff on GG. I like her all right in her movies, etc, but I don’t like this character. And really, Dan Humphrey is going to get Serena and a movie star. I think this is the most unbelievable part of the plot. I can totally buy all the conniving backstapping that goes on in this show because I’ve seen stuff like that before, but I really can’t buy Dan as such a hunk. So, sadly as much as I like this show, this season is off to a rocky start for me.
Worst Surprise: Vampire Diaries
WTF, CW? A repeat – damn it. I was all ready to see Vicki as a “vampire with issues” Your promos teased me so, but they did not do a good enough job of letting me know that the episode wasn’t until this week.
Could also possibly need to get my hearing checked…
October 19, 2009 at 12:20 pm (Happenings, Random Thoughts) (Lists, Music)
So yesterday, I decided to go through my checking account and see what I’m spending my money on to see where I could cut back some. Anyways, long story short, this probably wasn’t the best week to do that because I’m pretty sure it’s a little skewed to music expenses last week…
In the last week and a half I have…
* Been to all three venues at the CW Midtown complex.
* Paid $60 for tickets, of which $16 was in fees; $20 in parking; and probably about $40-$50 on drinks + tips.
* Seen 7 different artists/bands, involving approximately 25 musicians.
* Purchased 2 actual CDs, both of which I got Friday (They were both signed, so that was pretty cool) – Nathan Angelo’s “These Ol’ Keys” and Vedera’s “Stages”
* Purchased about $20 of music on iTunes.
So, yeah, I think I found the area that I should cut spending…
I also thought I’d rank the shows for you, just for fun. Although as a disclaimer, I’d like to say that I really enjoyed all of them.
1. Tyrone Wells (Vinyl 10/17): He was really at the top of his game Saturday. It was a really fun show.He didn’t play my favorite song, but he made me die laughing when he sang “Hate Song”.
2. Will Hoge (Loft 10/10): I had never heard him before, but I loved his music.
3. Ryan Horne (Loft 10/10): He seemed to be having more fun on stage than normal, so it was a good show. He actually went on early so I’m glad my friends were on time for once so we didn’t miss him.
4. Vedera (Center Stage 10/16): Kristen May was awesome – vocals, guitar, keys. It’s nice seeing a girl kick butt all around.
5. Mat Kearney (Center Stage 10/16) – I like Mat, I also like not being blinded by spotlights. Since I spent about 1/3 of his show with a spotlight in my eyes, he gets to come in 5th instead of somewhere higher.
6.The Myriad (Vinyl 10/17) – I enjoyed it, but the music itself is a little lower on the list of what I like to listen to. They did however tell a ghost story that lead to one of their songs. Since I do believe in ghosts, and it is October, I though that was neat.
7. Matt Hires (Vinyl 10/17): His music was pretty good, but he didn’t seem very comfortable on stage. Maybe it was a bad night for him, I don’t know, but that’s why he’s last. One of his songs will be on Grey’s Anatomy this week though, so that’s pretty cool for him.
*** Special shout out to my friend KW who came with me to Vinyl even though she had no idea who we were going to see, who was playing at any given moment, or quite possibly, and I might be going on limb with this one, when even looking at this list can’t remember who was who of the three artists we saw.
Hawaii by the numbers
October 11, 2009 at 5:14 pm (Happenings) (beach, Lists, travels)
* Four nights, Five days in paradise.
* One dog we saw wearing sunglasses and croakies hanging out of a driver’s window. We weren’t quick enough for a picture but the mental picture still makes me laugh.
* 2:45 am – that’s the time we left the hotel Thursday to drive up a mountain to see the sunrise. 3 hours of sleep once we got home before we hit the beach.

* 6 “free” mai-tais we enjoyed as part of the resort/parking fee.
* $166 – extra money we paid to have a convertible for the week. 100 – percent cooler I felt because I was driving a convertible in Hawaii.
One turtle we saw while snorkeling, one turtle that totally out swam us as we tried to keep up with it.
18,672 – grains of sand found in my hair after my sister took me out in what could only be classified as the most ungraceful exit from the water ever. (Ok, this one might not be true because really, who’s going to count grains of sand)
60 minutes of heaven during helicopter ride.

10 – number of hours spent driving the road to Hana and stopping at the beautiful waterfalls. 6.5 – number of hours it rained. 2 – number of times one of us slipped and almost fell off short but scary cliffs (slippery when wet)

19.5 – total number of hours in the air – 4 flights and 1 helicopter ride.
It was an amazing trip

Last night I went to my high school reunion. It wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t great either. I think the best parts of the weekend were the two friends I saw a part from the reunion. Friday I stayed with one of my good friends from college in Kansas City. I had a great time with her family, minus the 3-4am meltdown her three year old had.
Then today, before heading back to the airport I had lunch with a friend in Topeka who decided not to go to the reunion. I can’t blame him. It was really good seeing him. His wife went to California for the K-State game so I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to meet her, but it was really nice to catch up with him.
Nicest surprise – the beer and wine were free, I thought we had to pay for all the drinks, so it was good to not have to spend the money.
Number of people in attendance from my class: about 50 out of approximately 250 graduates.
Number of people that came from somewhere besides Topeka or the Kansas City area: 3, including myself.
Number of people it was really nice to see: About 15 - maybe
Number of people I didn’t even recognize or remember even after slyly reading their name tag: 2
Number of people I was disappointed that they weren’t there: 10
Overall summary: Should have stayed home and saved the money on the flight, rental car and hotel.
Things I learned at the Beach – Part 4
September 8, 2009 at 8:14 pm (Random Thoughts) (beach, booze, Friends, Lists, travels)
In case you’ve missed them: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
1. 15 girls and a few guys to help and still no one will be able to get the outdoor speakers to work – yes, the volume on my speakers is terrible, but at least I had some
2. Hot tubs probably work a lot better if the owner of the house tells you there is a charge to heat it beforehand instead of informing you that’s why it won’t work when you call to ask how to work it – Hot Tub Fail!
3. Kathryn makes delicious fish tacos and Samantha makes amazing French toast.
4. It might be possible to play a drinking game based on how many times Beau says totally or chug (this one is courtesy Amy and definitely something we should try next year)
5. No matter how well you think you plan there will have to be a few beer runs throughout the weekend, and oh yeah, why aren’t we drinking mimosas – we need to get stuff for mimosas…
6. Thanks to Elisabeth, I learned that there is such a thing as a dress that requires a DVD because there are about 20 different ways to wear it. Thanks to Summer, she was able to wear it even though she forgot the DVD.
7. I will only wear 1/4 of the clothes I pack but will have to wash them all because everything within a five mile radius of my suitcase will be covered in sand.
8. There are many spellings of Lindsey/Lindsay/Lyndsey and having four of them in one place will get confusing – even if you try numbering them because everybody has a different #1.
9. There are a million ways to get to Grayton Beach, going through Montgomery both ways this year and somehow managed to mix it up some between there and the beach.
10. Alabama has many fun little towns: I don’t remember the name of the town, but the tagline “Front Porch City” was true to its name (except one house, who may or may not get invited to town functions); Seeing a sign that says Welcome to OPP will immediately make me start humming O.P.P and being really sad that out of 3454 songs on my iPod there is not one by Naughty by Nature; some girl named Lisa owns almost a whole town – true story.
Things on my mind right now
August 14, 2009 at 10:57 am (Random Thoughts) (Friends, Lists)
1. Two guys arguing at Caribou about some business deal. I wish I knew what they were talking about and if and how it might affect the stock market, so I could be an insider and make some mullah…
2. I really hope the bug bombs work and rid my house of the fleas that have moved in. Nothing will drive you more crazy than having fleas in your house.
3. I need to pause and email KW about the ice luge for Elizabeth’s birthday party next weekend. I keep forgetting to do this.
4. Hmm, My Internet is staying connected here, it must be my router at home that makes it go in and out of connectivity.
5. This has been a crazy week, not only did I find fleas in my house, I also rear ended someone Wednesday and my car battery completely died last night when I was running errands on my way home.
6. I’m glad I’m not at work today.
7. Where should I eat lunch?
8. I hope the weather is nice on Sunday for the Brave’s game.
9. Oh man, the arguing guys are leaving – now I’m stuck with no one to eaves drop on.
10.I have not been to this Caribou since the early days when we did our small group here (now we meet at each other’s homes) It reminds of the night I decided to finally get over my fear of bible studies and take the step and accept the 11th or 12th invitation from MF and Kate to join them here on Tuesday nights. Gosh I can’t believe that was over three years ago. Where has the time gone.
I should have been sleeping
August 10, 2009 at 10:11 am (Random Thoughts) (Lists)
Last night I was up entirely too late going through stuff from high school. I have my 10 year reunion next month and decided to pull out my yearbook to study up on people. The yearbook was in a box with all my middle school and high school keepsakes. I decided to go through it all. Here’s what I learned.
1. I looked pretty amazing with my perm in 6th grade, and by amazing I mean in no way what so ever.
2. I don’t remember half of the meanings to stupid phrases we used to say so it’s really hard to understand what some people wrote in my yearbook.
3. I discovered why I never had any money saved even though I started working at 15 – it was all spent on alcohol and apparently film for my camera. I ended up editing my photo album down to about half it’s size.
4. For some reason I really thought that in the future at some point, I’d like to know stats from every single basketball tournament, volleyball match and softball game I ever played in. I don’t, so I threw out about a gazillion brackets, score sheets and records books (I did however keep the article for the Topeka Capital Journal that showed I had the highest batting average for my school)
5. Even after all my years in the honors program at TW and the four years I spent at K-State, I still had to look up and make sure I used the correct “Capital”
6. I didn’t remember as many people as I thought I would. I’m going to have to go through the yearbook again right before I leave.
7. My senior quote was lame. I would share it here, but it won’t make sense to anyone who’s reading this except maybe my sister, and I don’t really want to explain.
8. My ex-boyfriend’s quote was even lamer. That’s pretty sweet.
9. Unless I want to explain to my children what keg stands and beer bongs are, I’m either going to have to burn this box one day or buy a safe.
10. I’ve grown up a lot since then, which is a great feeling. Although, unlike my predictions in my senior scrapbook, I am not working in corporate public relations and I am not married to Michael. Thank you God.
